DESIGN THESIS / CREATIVE EXPLORATION
In this thesis project, I created a body of work through a focused study displayed in the Thomas P. Kelly Gallery at Loyola Marymount University. “Is This The Dream?” is a reflection of the tensions, relationships, and adaptability within the music industry. The mixed media pieces encapsulate the internal struggles and choices that music industry professionals may encounter throughout their careers. Through this creative thesis, I reflected on the dynamic and challenging nature of the industry, prompting people to reflect on their values, goals, and well-being.

As an artist and songwriter, I have seen music work in beautiful ways. While music moves hearts and makes people feel understood, the music industry and its organizations have notoriously seized creative control of artists’ visions, making music less about art and more about profit. These mixed media paintings explore the dreamy, internal dialogue of an artist and express the tensions between the deeply personal nature of creating music and the relinquishing of control.

I interviewed songwriters, producers, artists, and music industry professionals reflecting on their experiences, well-being, and struggles within the music industry. The bottom line: despite all, they won’t give up on their dreams. RAW THOUGHTS delves into the uncomfortable realities of the industry, aiming to shed light on issues such as mental health struggles and fair compensation. Through this piece, I hope to spark conversations about how we can work towards making the music industry a healthier and more creatively fulfilling place.
